Embroidered postcards
If you follow us on Instagram, @everythingsephemera, you may have viewed an unboxing of postcards I purchased at a Goodwill auction. I haven’t counted, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there were more than 1,000 postcards in there. There were some multiples, and others that were a little lackluster among the treasure. I could stick them in random packs as “bonus” items or freebies, but where is the fun in that? The fun part, and something we pride ourselves on at Everything’s Ephemera, is taking something that may not be interesting and making it unique.
Enter the embroidered postcard. I picked up some sashiko templates and some of the postcards which were duplicates and started playing. At its heart that’s what crafting or art is about—taking materials and playing with them. Anyway, here are my initial results. I think they’re a good first attempt, but I’m not sure if they will make it to the shop.
Lessons learned from this process:
Erasable ink doesn’t react well to glossy postcards
Sashiko requires even numbers of holes to work correctly
If you want the stitching to be noticeable, leave the pastel floss in the box
A paperclip is not a good replacement for an awl or piercing tool
